Robert Murphy amed director of vocational-technical center

Robert Murphy of Philadelphia is the nevt direc– tor of the Philadelphia/ Neshoba County \"ocational–

t1onal preparation teacher at the C. L. Morris Center also Ill Avon. In all. he has 21 years experience in secondary ~ucation. A graduate of Ethel High School and Holmes J unior College, MUrphy received a bachelor's degree m Industrial educatwn from Mississippi State J\ersity and a master's degree in secondary ad– ministra tion and supervision from Delta State University. He 1s married to the former Joan Pope of Ko:>ciusko. They have a daughter, Alicia, a lOth grader at Nesboba Central High School. Murphy said his main goals a re to stimulate more interest and increase enrollment at the vocational– technical facility which serves students from Philadelphia and Neshoba Central schools. Courses offered include Allied Health , Automotive ~Techanics, Business Technology, Cl'pthing, Diver– ~•fied Technology and Metal Trades. Classes began

Mur phy, who began his new duties earlier this summer, formerly served as assistant principal at Neshoba Central High School. He s ucceeds Ha rry Ca r ter who retired following a lengthy career in public education.

Carter served as the center's fi rst director, a position he had held since 1983 Murphy is also a former assistant prmcipal at Riverside High School in Avon, near Greenville. Aug. 10 The center also offers variou~ vocational adult night classes in– cluding Auto Mechanics, Bookkeep– ing. Typing. Word Processing, Computer Programming, Lotus 1-2-3, Industnal Sewing, Industrial Wiring. Residential Wiring, Air Con– ditioning a nd Refrigeration, Machine Shop and Welding. Murphy sa1d GED preparation classes are also available. He said the GED exam is given the third Sa turday of each month. East Central also offers various academic and technical courses in fall , 8pring and summer terms.
