ECCC again offers adults 'First Course Free" program

Are you over 21 and think– ing about attending college for the first time? If so, East Central Commu– nity College in Decatur offer s a special program for those adults who may need an extra incentive to pursue a college education: a free three-hour course. According to Gene Davis, Director ofAdult and Continu– ing Education an increasing number of adults enroll at East Central each semester, with many of those students taking advantage of the "first course free" policy. "Statistics prove that adult students actually perform very well in the classroom and once adults realize that fact they usually take additional course work and go on to complete requirements for a college degree," Davis said. Initiated in 1987, the first– course free policy applies to adults over 21 who have grad– uated from high school or passed the GED exam and have never attended college. Those eligible for the special program must also reside within the college's support district, which includes Leake,

Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Winston counties. Adults who enroll in the "first course free" automatical– ly realize a savings of $150 (560 per semester hour). Books and other materials (if required) still have to be pur– chased at regular costs, Davis added. A recently implemented scholarship program is a lso provided for non traditional students who plan to attend : East Central on a full-time basis. Davis said a tuition schol– arship is available to any qualified Mississippi resident 23 years of age or older who enrolls as a full-time student. The scholarship will be avail– able to the student for three consecutive semesters follow– ing the first 12 semester hours earned as either\a part-time students at East Central.
