Mississippi women ba:-ketball players did quite well in gathering National Junior College Athletic Association glory. Pearl River's Elaine Powell fin– ished atop Divi~ion I scoring with a 27.5 average ru well as sixth in 3- point 6eld-,goa1 percentage at 46.3, making 56 of 121 attempts in 31 game::.. Powell ai... o gained first-team All– ~merica honors. East Central's Rena Reed was second team. East Mississippi's LaToya Weaver was the national rebound– ing leader with a 17.6 average and seventh in scoringat 24.0. Hinds' Latina Edwards was fifth in scoringat 24.3 and lOth rebound– ingat12.5. Other Mississippi national lead– ers were East's Gwen Smith fifth in 2-point field-goal percentage at 64.9 (133 of205) with NorthwestMissis– sippi's Shantell Atkins finished sixth at 63.1 (101 of 160), while Northwes t 's Bridget Goodnight placed ninth in 3-point percentage at43.9 (29 of66). Pearl River hold• tryout•: Pearl River tryouts for women's basketball and softball will be held today at M.R. White Coliseum. The basketball tryouts will be at 1 p.m. with softball to follow at 3:15. PollyKirkland, who coaches both for the LadyWildcats, suggests can– didates arrive at least 15 minutes prior to starting times, bringing their practice clothing and equip– ment.
