EC Participates In Scholars Bowl
Students representing East Central Community College in Decatur will battle wlls with other state community/junior college represen– taLJves for academic superiority and S24,600 in scholarships when the Ole Miss Scholars Bowl is held February 16-17, 1991. Members of the East Centraltcam include Cay Clark of Chunky, Bethany Brantley of Carthage, Ab Germany of Decatur and Jim Holder of Union. Serving as alternate is Jeff Hilt ofUnion. Advisors are Dr. Shel– by Harris and Dr. Jeff Smith. The sixth annual event, twice won by East Central students, is held on the Oxford campus. The academic competition will invoice four-member teams, who are questioned in basic areas of science, mathematics, humanities, fine arts, and social sciences. Preliminary and semi-final rounds will be scheduled for Friday afternoon and evening. The championship round will be
played Saturday morning, and its winners will be awarded the Bowl trophy, to be retained for one year at the home institution. Each member of the flfst-place 1 team will earn $3,400, payable at $850 per semester in tlle junior and senior years. Second- and tbird-placc team members will qualify for Sl ,OOO each, payable at S250 semester. Also, dependent upon tbctr grade point average, members of second and tbird place teams m1y add from S800 to $1,900 to their tot- al winnings through Phi Theta Kap– pa awards and Transfer Academac f Excellence Scholarships money. In addition, tbe three participams1< who answer tbe most toss-up ques– tions correctly and are not members of any of the top three teams will qualify for $1,000 each.
