Mixon's PAT deadlocked the homecoming battle at 20-20. Southwest grabbed its first lead in the division matchup when Mixon booted a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. The scoring drive cov– ered 59 yards. Following the Southwest kickoff, East Central took pos– session on its 19 yard line and quickly found itself with an excellent scoring opportunity after Kelly's 53-yard pass com– pletion to Welch gave EC the pigskin on the Southwest 11 yard Jine. Kelly put the War– riors in the lead when he fired an 11-yard strike to wide receiver Oreaka Wells with about 11 minutes left in the contest. Porter added the PAT and East Central led 27-23. The Warriors appeared to be in excellent position to keep Southwest from scoring when the Bears took possession on their five yard line following Porter's kickoff. But a key 60-yard run by Matthews gave Southwest good field position on the EC 36. The Bears would later take the lead for good with Matthews provid– ing the winning margin on his five-yard scamper. Following Mixon's PAT, Southwest led 30- 27. After the Bears ' kickoff, East Central took possession on its 30 but could not move the pigskin for a scoring opportuni– ty.

back J ames Matthews with just over five minutes remaining gave Southwest Mississippi Communit y College a 30-27 win over East Central Commu– nity College and spoiled the Warriors' annual homecoming contest. East Central, which led 20-7 at halftime and later rallied to take a 27-23 lead early in th e final stanza, saw its chances for a .500 season fall by the way– side was the Warriors dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in South Division competition. East Cen– tr al has two games remaining - a division battle at Jones and a non-division matchup at home with Northeast - on the 1991 schedule. With their victory, the visit– ing Bears improved to 5-3 and 2-3. The Warriors took an early 6-0 lead with 6:28 remaining in the first period when running back Willie McClelland scam– lpered 45 yards to paydirt. Pete Por ter's PAT was not success– ful. The 84-yard scoring march came on East Central's second possession. East Central missed on two other scoring opportunities in the first quarter when Porter was not able to connect on field goal attempts from 38 and 32 yards. However, the Warriors were able to extend their lead in the second stanza when McClel– land's two -yard blast capped a 57-yard scoring march with 9:59 left before halftime. Doug Mixon added the PAT which narrowed the EC lead to 12-7. East Central answered th·e Southwest tally with a touch– down of its own as Kelly direct– ed the Warriors on a 67-yard scoring drive with the six– pointer coming on a nine-yard strike from the Warrior signal caller to running back Jerry Welch. Kelly and McClelland connected on a two-point pass play and EC stretched its lead to 20-7 at intermission. The key play in the scoring march was a 48-yard pass from Kelly to wide receiver Kendrick Coleman which gave East Cen– tral possession on the South– west nine-yard line. In the third period, the War– rior defense he ld Southwest from cashing in on an excellent scoring opportunity as the Bears faced a first down situa– tion on the EC 13. The key defensive play for the Warriors came on fourth down when defensive back Bo Barry tack– led Southwest running back Curtis Spears for a short loss at the original line of scrimmage. Southwest would later find the endzone when r unning back James Matthews scored on a one-yard run with 5:05 left in the third period. Mixon's PAT was blocked by Warrior defensive back Russel Meeks.
