Lady arriors seek big year

Completing the freshman class are Marcella Torrence, a 5-foot-8 forward from Morton; Apryl Hen– don, a 5-foot-2 guard from Union; Natasha Willis, a 5-foot-4 guard from Choctaw Central; and Brooke Smith, a 5-foot-11 for– ward from Neshoba Central. "We only have six freshmen," Pace added, "but some of them are looking pretty good. The way some freshmen are playing. there's no guarantee they won't move ahead (of some sopho– mores) before very long in the season. "We'll try to play a power game and dominate inside. DECATUR - Af ter go ing 20- 5 last season, East Central Community College women's ba– sketball coach Sammy Pace is ready for more of the same this go round. It would be hard not to look for– ward to a season when you have eight pl ayers - fou r of whom were starters -returning from a hi ghly successful squad that was nationally ranked on several occa– sions and finished second in the MJCASouth Division regular sea– son, second in the South Division Tournament, and second in the MICA StateTournament. " It 's something to shoot for,'' Pace said of his teams' success in recent years. "I'd rather be the one that folks are dreading than be the one they want to see every night." The returning sophomores are Carolyn Boatman, a 5-foot-10 for– ward from Carthage; Jackie Glad– ney, a 5-foot-7 guard from Louis– vill e; Paula Nash, a 5-foot-10 guard from Carthage; Shontel Lowe, a 6-foot center from Alex– and r ia, La.; Shea Oakley, a 5-foot-10 forwa rd from Louis– ville; Tonya Stowers, a 5-foot-8 forward from Scott Central; and Beverly Ware, a 5-foot-9 forward from Forest. Boatman and Nash averaged 11 .4 points as freshmen, Lowe 11.3, Oakley 6.8, Gladney 6.3, Stowers 1.9, andWare 1.3. Nash and Lowe were named to the. all-state second-team squad, wh1le Boatman was an honorable mention pick.
