The nice thing about the 10 players named to The Meridian Star 's first junior college men's all-area team is that half of them are freshmen . In addition to those that made the all-area team, six others received honorable mention honor s . Again, half are freshmen. The players were nominated by the coaches from Clarke Col– lege, East Central , East Mississippi, Jones, and Meri– dian. The team was then selected by The Meridian Star. • Tyrone Arrington - The 6-foot-5 sophomore from EMCC averaged 19.4 points and 7.0 re– bounds this past season as the Lions went 13-18 and played in the MJCA state and Region 23 tournaments. He shot 49.6 per– cent (239-of-481) from the floor and 67.7 percent (120-of-177) from the free-throw line. Arr– ington also had 35 steals. The Livingston, AJa., native wound up his two seasons with

East Mississippi Community College sophomore Tyrone Arrington and Clarke College coach Ricky Lindsey have been selected as the player and coach of the year in The Meridian Star's inaugural junior college aU-area team. Arrington, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Liv– ingston, Ala ., averaged 19.4 points and 7.0 re– bounds this past season as the Lions went 13-18 and played in the MJCA state and Region 23 tournaments. Arrington made 49.6 percent (239-of-481) of his shots from the floor and 67.7 percent (12o-of-177) of his free throws. He also had 35 steals. Arrington ended his two seasons at Scooba with 1,093 points, averaging 19.2 points in 57 games. He was also chosen to the MJCA's first team all-state North Division team and played in the all-star game where he scored 12 points.

He was a second team aU-state South Division selection and played in the all-star game. • Honorable mention - Chosen as honorable mention are 6-foot-3 freshman forward Greg Pucker– ing (13.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) from MCC; 6-foot-4 sophomore Steve Ed– wards (7.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg) from EMCC; 6-foot-4 freshman for– ward Charlie Donnerson (7.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 64.0 percent field goal, 62.1 percent free throw) fr·om ECCC; 6-foot-1 sophomore point guard James Cooke (8.3 ppg, 4.2 apg ) from JCJC ; 5-foot-10 freshman guard Eric Mays (6.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.3 apg, 86.2 percent free throw) of ECCC; and 6-foot-1 sophomore guard Vincent Simmons (10.6 ppg, 3.8 apg) from JCJC.

Mobile College, Jones was a se– cond team aU-state South Divi– sion choice and played in the aU– star game. • Chuck Haynes - The 6-foot-2 freshman guard from Clarke averaged 11.3 points and 3.0 re– bounds for the 9-20 Panthers. Haynes shot 43 percent from the field and 73.5 percent from the free-throw line. • Louis Lumpkin - The 6-foot-6 freshman from MCC averaged 15.3 points and 7.0 rebounds. • Cory Brown - The 6-foot-4 freshman forward from Clarke averaged 18.2 points and 7.9 re– bounds and had 47 steals. Brown shot 53.8 percent from the field . • Tyrone Stowers - The 6-foot-5 freshman forward from ECCC averaged 16.8 points and 4.1 re– bounds. He had 29 assists and blocked 26 shots. Stowers shot 66.5 percent (153-of-230) from the floor and 70.8 percent (46-of-65) from the Stowers was an honorable ~ention all-state South Division free-throw line.
