Eddie Lee Johnson, 19, identified as the student's ex-boyfriend, surren– dered about 3 p.m. to Scott County deputies. He was transferred to the Newton County Sheriffs Department later in the day, said Newton County Chief Deputy Ron Davis. Authorities said the student, Nancy Ann Hughes ofMorton, died Wednes– dayfrom a gunshot wound in the head.
Hughes was taken by ambulance to Laird Hol>pital in Union about 6 p.m. She was pronounced dead at 7:30p.m. Davis said Hughes reportedly was walking on campus ~ith a friend when Johnson allegedly approacht>d her and said he wanted to talk. Davis said Hughes refused a nd shots were fired. J ohnson allegecUy left campus in a car, which was later found at hts parents' home in Morton.
