NEWTON - Northwest's Rangers fired a 23-over par 311 to claim the East Central Com– munity College Invitational Golf Tournament at Newton Country Club Tu~day. Jeff Patterson shot a 3-over par 75 to lead the Rangers, while Paul Liles added a 76, Michael Zizman a 78, and Jack Brooks an 82. "We'vewon three tournaments and comt! 10 ~econd twice." Nor– thwest coach Don Edwards said. "We're pretty fortunate. ·Every week somebody does something different." Edwards coached the Lady Rnngers' basketball team to the Region 23 championship. Northwest clatmed a six-stroke win over bolh host ECCC and Hinds at 317. Gulf Coast was fourth at 328. Completing the teams were Southwest 354 and Itawamba 358. ECCG was Jed by Louisville's B.J. Hailey at 77, Decatur's Brian Cooper and Jud Nance at 79, and Newton's John Lockett at 82. "Ifs our best score,'' ECCC coach Joe CJark said. ''We've been fighting for fourth -- three teams trying to win first and six trying to win fourth . This time we l>eat Gulf Coast and tied Hinds. so we got up with the top ones We \\ere at hOme and these kids knew this course. t lhink that helped." Northeast, Copiah-Lincoln . and Jones did nol field full .quads, but did compete for medalist honors. ln fact, it was Co-Lin's Da,:id McClendon that had the day's best round. a 2-over par74. After bogeying the first two boles, McClendon played even par golf over the final 16. He had birdies on the third and 12th holes to go with bogeys on the ninth and 11th holes. Smith opened with a double– bogey on the first hole and then bogeyed the third hole to go 3-over.
