Byrd punted four limes for a 42.5 yard average Defens1vely, EC was led by Dyoassu:. Buggs who had 10 solo tackles and two assists. Other top defenders were Hayes P etty, eight tackles , Felton Burroughs, five tackles. and interception and fumble recovery, Wyatt Williams, four and six; and T1m Jackson who had a fum– ble recovery and a quarterback sack.
East Central dominated the statistics but Pearl River held the edge on the scoreboard as the visiting Wildcats claimed a 17-13 commumty college victory Saturday afternoon on the Decatur campus. Following the Homecoming loss, East Central fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in South Division action. Pearl River improved to 6-1 and 3-1. The Warrior s will travel to Southwest Mississippi Communily College (1-6, 0-4) this Saturday for another division matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30p.m. on the Summit cam– pus. Running back Sammie Holifield gave East Central an early lead when he scored on a four-yard run with 7:37 left in the first period. Pete Porter's PAT put the Warriors our front by a 7-ij margin. The scoring drive, which came on EC's first possession, covered 89 yards a nd featured clutch receptions by w1de receiver Tony Kidd, who had 10 catches on the day for 138 yards. Following a second quarter Pearl R1ver fumble which was recovered by Wamor defenstve back Felton Bur– roughs on the Wildcat seven-yard line, East Central appeared set to extend its lead until quarterback Lamont Byrd fumbled the pigskin and P earl River took over on its own three-yard line. The game's momentum quickly changed Pearl River's way as highly touted running back Michael Toefield found an opening in the Warrior defense and raced 87 yards before be– ing hauled down by EC's Earl Camp– bell on the Warrior six-yard line. P earl River later struck paydirt when quarterback Tim BiroUe found an open Jody Watkins for a five-yard scoring pass play with 5:23 remaining before halrtime. Rene Suarez added the PAT which deadlocked the divi– sion battle at 7-7. The Wildcats took the lead for good w1th seven seconds left before halftime when Birotte connected with tight end Curtis Vickers on a three– yard pass play. Suarez again kicked the PAT and Pearl River led 14-7.
