EC Board names building after administrator

According tc, the recently adopted policy for thJ: :! called into active military duty, any student who com– pleteS more thJn 14 weeks of a semester, who is in good ~tanding withe college, and who has not exceeded allowable absences during the period of enrollment will be pennitted to receive full credit for all appropriate courses wilh final grade being based upon grades recorded for the enrollment period. Concerning the Martin Luther King Day observance, the college will follow the same policy as in previous yuears. East Central will commmemorate the January 21. 1991 occasion by following the regular schedule of classes and by sponsoring a brief memorial service at the conclusion of theclass day. In the area of Instruction, the Board heard a report on Lhe effects of St.:lte budget cuts on industrial services and other vocational– technical programs at EastCentral. According lO a memorium form State Superintendent of Education Dr. Richard L. Thompson, proposals for FY 91 budget reductions for vocational programs include the following: -Reduce vocational salary reim– bursements in ongoing programs, not including CHIDA programs, by about 2 percent; -Reduce approved equipment al– locations for the district by 20 percent, -Eliminate all local travel reim– bursement for the FY 90-91 year; ~
of the college budget with regard to slate budget cuts and later approved payment of excessive medical ex– penses incurred by football player David Lee Stuart of Morton for inj uries sustained during the 1989-90 school year. Tbe outstand– ing balance amounted toS3,151.03. The Board agreed lO advertise for bids for a heating and cooling sys– tem for the old Prcsdent's Home (funding covered in the major Main– tenance Plan), gave approval for the President and Business Manager to aw3Id the bid for a sprinkler system on the lootball field on December 7, 1990 (the legal bid opening dale) and approved the purchase of ffiM System 36 computer software as a single source item. In Lhc area of Building and Grounds, the Board heard a r~prot concerning the first noor renovation of Winston Hall. Concemrng Student Services, a report was given on the 1990 fall semester enrollment audit as con– ducted by SLate Boord for Commun– ity and JuniorCollege personnel. According to audit figures, the total 1990 fall cnrollemnt was 1303 studcnLs. Dr. Phil Sutphin, Dean of Stu– dents, also reported on advance re– gistration and the projected enroll– ment for the 1991 spring semester. Registration for the spring term will be held January 14-15 with day classes scheduled to start Wedncsdy, January 16. In Old Business, the Board ap– proved the final draft of the college's lnstituuonal Self-Study and received copies of the 1991 spring semester day and evening class schedules.
TheEastCentral Community Col– lege Bo:u-d of Trustees ha an– nounced plans to name lhe college's Vocational-Technical Center in honor of one of Lhe two-year institu– tion's long Lime administrators. The center will offictaUy become the Bradford J. Tucker Applied Technology Center in tribute lO Lhc Leake County native for his 40 years of service on Lhc Decatur campus. Dr. Tucker, 64, has served as Dean of Instruction for 30 years and has been regarded as Lhe "~n of Dcnns" among Missassippi's col– leges and universities for many years. HI." has been employed ol East Central since the summer of 1951 \\hen he first served three years as vocation:.~l-agricullural instructor at the old Newton County Agricultural High School wh1ch was Lhen pan of Lhc East Cemral Junior College sys– tem. He was also an academic agrucultural instructor for seven years before being named to his current position in 1960. He also t.tught Lwo years at Benton High School an Yazoo Coumy. When he retires in June 1991, Dr. Tucker will have accumulated 42 tolal years service in the field of educauon. Ceremonies to officially dedicate the technology center are scheduled sometime in May 1991. Also honored during the Board's regular monthly meeting was rctir– mg trustee Lomer E. Cliburn of Union whose 90th b1rlhday was observed during a noon luncheon.
