Reception planned honoring Edna Mayo

A reception bononng PhiJadelphta artist Mrs. Edna Mayo will be held from 2 lO 5 p.m. Sunday, September 9, at East Central Community Col– lege, Decatur. Sponsored by the col– lege's an depanment, the reception will be held in the Fine Ans Center. Mrs. Mayo has been involved with art since she was a young child growing up in Newton County. She sa1d she has always loved LO draw and. with the encouragement of her late husband, she has drawn thou– sands of pictures that arc on display in homes throughout theSouth. Her favorite flower to watercolor is the rose. The flower most requested is her magnolia. She said her most requested drawing would be her rendition of the Neshoba County Farr. In her fair works, Mrs. Mayo feels the primitive representa– tion of the fair is necessary to capture the true atmosphere felL by fair gocrs. She is not a primitive painter, except when painting fair pictures. shes:1id. An art instructor since 1926, Mrs. Mayo has instilled in Lhousands the "love of art", said East Cenltal art mstructor Bruce Guraedy. Mr ·. Mayo. who attended ECCC

and Clarlce College. credits a lot ol her talents to the many great teachers with whom she has studied. H~ greatest influence, she said. was Marie Hull of Jackson. Mrs. MayQ said she worked with Mrs. Hull fol many years until she was told b Mrs. Hull there was nolhing left teach her. "You have mastered watercolor," Mrs. Hull told i\1rs Mayo. Guready said the spirit of Edn! Mayo is felL in each of her works Her love of the bc.1uty of flowerl surrounding her neighborhood i reflected in the beauty of the wor~ she has portrayed on paper. The public is invited to view her art work which will be on display in the Fine Arts Center lobby Lhrough· out Lhe month of September.
