offered this fall. Newell's leadership has not gone unnoticed as he was selected Out– standing Teacher from the Vocational-Technical Division in 1986. He is a member of various profes– sional, civic, and national organiza– tions including MS Vocational Asso– ciation and the America! Vocational Association, Decatur Chamber of Commerce, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is also a member of Clarlc-Venable Baptist Chruch where he serves as deacon.l He is married to the former Bob– bie Spencer who is also a natajve of Itawamba County. They have two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Mars, whose husband, Dan, is an attorney in Phi– ladelphia; and Mrs. Pam Keilh of DCcatur. Pam teaches in lhe Newom County School system and ber hus– band, Tommy, is Plant ~1an3ger for Bon Homme, Decatur. The Mars have l\\.'0 sons, Adam and Willia:m. and the Keiths also have t\\'0 child– ren; a son, Camp, and a d.Jughter, Kerri. \\'hen asked about bow heplans to sepnd his retirement years, 'ewelL wilh a twinkle in hJS eye, said he was sure lhe three v.'Omen in his family will fmd plenty for him to dol Newell is an avid fisherman, and he maintajns a large and beautiful lawn with flower beds and a variety of shrubs around his home just inside the south limit of the town of Decatur. Because he enjoys working with wood, he has a shop where he always has some project underway. He recently completed an entertainment center for one of his daughters and admits that there is a backlog of items he intends to build once he has more free time.

A teaching and administrative career which spans 33 years has come to an end for Lavane Newell who recently announced his retire– ment as Director of Vocational– Technical Instruction at ECCC in Decatur. Newell's retirement becomes effective on June30. Newell, v.ho joined lhe East Cen– tral facul£y in 1961, was hired by lhen President Arno Vincent to teach woodworlong, drafting design, mechanical drawing and descriptive geometry. In 1966, he was named to lhe Yo- Tech director's post Prior to his joining the college staff, he was flTst employed from 1957 to 1961 as a teacher at Moss Point High School. A native of ltawamba County, he is .a graduate of Itawamba County High School, Itawamba Junior Col– lege and MSU where he received a bachelor of arts and master's degree. Since receiving his master's, he has completed an additional 36 graduate hours in School Administration and Vocational Education atMSU.
