East Central provides a Winston County continues to play a major role in the success of East Central Community College in Decatur as college personnel, lo– cal citizens and students hold vari– ous responsible positions of leader– ship. Board of Trustees members from Winston County include Board Chairman Henry B. "Bubba" Hud– speth, Jerry Nance, Randal Liv– ingston, Mrs. Ann Wood, Leo Parker and Dr. Fred Perkins. both of Nanih Waiya; Jimmie Nowell, Jr., Winston Academy; Scottie Pippm, Shawn White, Zed– erick Cistrunk and Anthony Clark, all of Louisville; and Stacey Lampley and Bruce Jordan, both of Noxapater.

Louisville residents W.A. "Bill" Taylor represents the East Central district on the State Advisory Council of the Mississippi Com– munity/Junior College Economic Development Foundation and Jim Raven is Winston County's repre– sentative on the East Central Local Economic Advisory Council. Mrs. Patsy Clark, also of Louisville, serves as county representative to the ECCC Alumni Association. Many students from Winston County also hold leadership roles and are very much involved in the college's ongoing success. Serving as 1989-90 student body president is Hal Land, a Louisville High School graduate. Hal also re– cemly was chosen Mr. ECCC. Vice president honors belong to another Louisville graduate, B.J. Hailey. Hailey also excels in spons activi– ties and he was named to the All– State golf team last season. Among other students in leader– ship positions is Lisa Hatcher, a graduate of Nanih Waiya High School, who currently serves as president of the Baptist Student Union. Several Winston County students were recently named to Who's Who Among Students in American Ju– nior Colleges and include, Land, Hailey, Hatcher, Joey Boykin, Wen Spiva of Noxapater and Winston Academy graduate Kimberly Hobby. Hobby was also selected 1989 Maid of Honor and was rec– ognized during homecoming activi– tiPc:

Winston Countians who are members of the Lady Warrior and Warnor basketball squads include Jackie Gladney, Shea Oakley, Sadie Triplett, Tyron Bender and Jason Johnson, all of Louisville. Baseball team members include Joey Boykin, Winston Academy; Scott Fulcher, Louisville and Davtd Luke, Nanih Waiya. Besides sports activities, the col– lege's music and drama departments also carry out active programs dur– ing the school year. Along with an outstanding marching band which entertains during half-time ceremonies, other musical groups include the Colle– gians, concert and jazz bands, brass ensemble, concert choir, gospel choir and ECCC ensemble. Band members from Wmston County include Hisaw and Palmieri and Winston Academy graduate Tammy Robinson. The drama department produces a dinner theater in the fall semester and presents a full-scale Broadwa) musical each spring. Last year "Cinderella" was presented with "Damn Yankees" scheduled as the 1990 production. Of course the college's rr. in mission is to provide the very test education for its students. East Central provides a variety of programs which include semor col– lege or university parallel, tee ·mi– cal, vocational, industrial sen ice. economic development, adul: and remedial education.

East Central is led by Dr. Eddie M. Smith, a Noxapater High School graduate, who is completing his fiflh year as college president. Dr. Smith was earlier named the college's ''Alumnus of the Year" and was recognized during the 1989 homecoming activities. Under Dr. Smith's leadership, the community college has experienced record enrollments each year, with the largest ever enrollmem- 1275 students - being reported for the 1990 spring semester. Of that total, 145 students are from Winston County. The 1275 figure includes students enrolled in day and evening . classes. Evening classes are pro– vided throughout the five-county district and are offered at the Louisville-Winston County Yo– Tech Center. Besides Dr. Smith, other college personnel who have Winston County connections include Harry Carter, director of th" college-oper– ated Philadelphia-t-..cshoba County Vo-Tech Center; Gene Davis, dlfector of adult and continuing education; John Adcock and there– cently employed Jimmy Dempsey, both vocational-technical coun– selors; and faculty members Miss Lucille Wood WITS.
