East Central's James signs with Georgia St. By MARTY STAMPER Star sports writer DECATUR-East Central Community College sophomore Michael James of Gary, Ind., signed a national basketball letter of intent with Georgia State Friday. Georgia State, located in Atlanta, is a member of the TransAmerica Conference. "They're losing the best or second best player in the conference after this year and they wantedMichael to come in and take his place," ECCC men's basketball coach Jay Bowen said of the 6-foot-8, 220-pounder. "They're expecting him to really do well this year. "Michael is improving every game with more playing time," Bowen added. "I believe when he gets there he will develop into a real good player. He chose the school because of his ability to go in and play right away. And he liked the city of Atlanta and the coaching staff." James averaged 8.9 points and 5.9 rebounds as a freshman. He shot 81.3 percent from the free-throw line and was named an honorable men– tion all-stater by the MJCA. As a sophomore, James is averaging 9.0 points and 7.3 rebounds and has made 75 percent of his field-goal attempts. James signed with Ole Miss out of high school, but attended ECCC after not qualifying academically under NCAA Division I standards. James chose Georgia State over the University of New Orleans.
