HONORED BY LEGISLATURE The Mississippi Legislature recently recognized and honored 70 faculty members and students from 31 univer– sities and colleges throughout the state as part of Higher Education Appreciation Day, Working for Academic Excellence (H.E.A.D.W.A.E.). The annual observance was established inl 988 by Speaker ProTem Cecil Sim– mons to recognize faculty members and undergraduate students who achieved excellence in scholarship, leader– ship and service. During Higher Education Appreciation Day, students toured the capitol, were introduced to the House and Senate, met with Governor Ray Mabus, and were honored at a luncheon attended by the gover– nor, legislative members, college and university presidents, and business and corporate sponsors throughout the state. Representing East Central Community College were sophomore Tammy Kirkland of Philadelphia and math instructor Dr. Shelby Harris, who are shown seated next to college president Dr. Eddie M.
