ECCC hosts tourney By Marty Stamper Special to The Star DECATUR - East Central hosts a four-school junior college basketball tournament, Thursday-Friday. In Thursday's 2 p.m. opener, Holmes and Mary Holmes battle in a women's contest. The same men's teams square off at 4. East Cen– tral's Lady Warriors host Lawson State (Ala.) at 6 p.m., followed by those men's teams at 8. On Friday, Holmes and Lawson will have a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. followed by an ECCC-Mary Holmes twinbill at 6. ECCC's Lady Warriors are 3~ with wins over Selma (Ala.), 85-53, Concordia (Ala.), 93-29, and East Mississippi, 82-60. The Lady War– riors average 86.7 points, while allowing only 47.3. Umeki Edwards leads the ECCC offense with a 12.7 average. Carol Boatman is a close second at 12.3. Shontel Lowe (11.7), Paula Nash (9.7), Sadie Triplett (8.3), Kathy McDougle (7.0), Tonya Stowers (6.0), and Ashley Harkins (5.3) have been the other main scorers. ECCC's Warriors are 1-2 under first-year coach Jay Bowen. Tyrone Bender (11.7), Terry Thames (11.3), Charlie Donnerson (10.7), Michael James (10.7), Travis Watkins (10.3), Mark Gates (8.3), and Kelvin Young (8.0) are the leading scorers. Bender leads in assists with 4.7, while James leads in rebounds with 7.3. Lawson's Cougars are picked to finish third in the six-team Central Division in Alabama. Four players return from last year's 1Q-14 team, while coach Eldridge Turner has added three transfers - Billy Jef– ferson (6-foot-4) and Donald Silmon (6-0) from John A. Logan (ID.) and Charles Moore (6-8) from Howard (Texas). Guard Vincent Mc- Cord (6-0) is expected to provide the outside shooting. . Lawson's Lady Cougars have four returnees from last year's 1-16 squad. Lorri Culpepper (5-8) and Nichelle Thompson (5-5) are the top veterans. The tallest Lawson player is 5-10 freshman Sernaylia Jones. Both Holmes' teams lost to Hinds Monday. The o-1 Lady Bulldogs fell77-73, while the 1-1 Bulldogs went down 93-86. The Bulldogs have an 81-72 win over Clarke. Mary Holmes' men will open their season at ECCC, while the Lady Eagles lost their opener to Southwest (64-62) prior to last night's game at Co-Lin.
