Herman Alford Selected 1984 ECJC Alumnus Of The Year

Courts, the US Court of Appeals for: the 5th District, and the United State Supreme Court. Alford voluntarily entered the Ar– my in 1941, attended Infantry Officers Candidate School in 1942, and was commissioned second lieutenant in the infantry. He served with the looth Infantry Division, the 17th Airborne Division, and the 82nd Airbome)Division. Aiter completing parachute training school, he served in the European Theater of Operations receiving three battle stars during the Arden– nes, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns. Alford was also awarded the Bronze Star medal and received an honorable discharge from the service in February, 1946. He then served in the Mississippi National Guard as Brigadier General until his retire– ment in 1969. Serving as city attorney for 28 years (1953-1981), Alford is a member of the board of directors and vice-president of the Neshoba County Fair Association, Inc., the board of directors of the Citizens Bank (Philadelphia), and the board of directors of East Mississippi . Farmers Llvestock Company. Hehasservedaschainnanofthe Industrial Committee of the Chamber of Commerce for eight years and as a member of the Board of Trustees of East Central Junior College. A member of the First Baptist Church (Philadelphia), he and his wife, the former Gwendolyn Thomas; have three children, Mrs. Janne Alford Thomas, Patrick Thomas Alford, and Herman Woodrow Alford, Jr., all of whom atten,ded East Central Junior College. The Alfords have two grand children, Anthony Lee Thomas an Melaine Suzanne Alford.

Herman Alford of Philadelphia has been selected as the 1984 "Almnnus of the Year" by the East Central Junior College Alumni Association. Alford will be honored at homecoming activities on Saturday, Oct. 13. A reception will be held in his honor in the Fine Arts Building at 4:30 p. m. He will also be recognized at the alumni banquet in W. C. Mabry cafeteria at 5:30 p. m.. and during the half-time ceremonies of the East Central-Hinds game. Born Sept. 16, 1915, in Philadelphia, Alford is the son of the late Benjamin Warren Alford and Phronettie Davidson ·Alford. After graduating as salutatorian of his class at Philadelphia High School in 1934, Alford came to East Central Junior College where he played football and served as president of the sophomore class. After graduating from ECJC in 1936, he went on to play football at Mississippi College and grad\Ulted in 1938 with a bachelor of arts degree with distinction. Following graduation at MC, Alford went to Clinton High School as assistant coach in 1938 and then ac– cepted a job with the Mississippi State Board of Health in Boliver County in 1939. In 1940, he attended law school at

Cumberland · University, Lebanon, Tenn., and was admitted to practice law after he passed the Mississippi State 3ar in July, 1941. Alford received a bachelor of law degree from Cumberland in May, 1946 and entered the active practice of law in Philadelphia in May, 1946 where he has continued to date. He has been actively engaged in the practice of law in all courts of law in the county, state, and Federal
