Ballet Mississippi to perform at ECJC

Ballet Mississippi will be perform– ing on Tuesday evening. November 13 at 7: 30 p.m. in the Huff Auditorium on the campus of E~t Central Junior College at Decatur. MS. This perfor– mance is being sponsored by the Newton Arts Council. Tickets are now on sale with adults-tickets at $!'i and student tickets at $2 each. These may be purchased locally from Lynne Ken– na at Farmers and Merchants Bank or tickets will be available at the door on the night of the performance. Ballet Mississippi is Mississippi's only professional dance organization. It is a concert-oriented touring com– pany based on\he state's capitol. The company tours with eight to twelve professionals . Under the Artistic Director, Charles Dickson, the young, enthusiastic spirit of Ballet Mississip– pi continues to bring a dynamic quali– ty to its repertoire of classical and contemporary works . The pieces in– clude something for every taste. Featured dancer is Kathy Thibodeaux of Jackson. She has per- · formed as a guest artist throughout the South and in the Stars of American Ballet Gala. Kathy won the silver medal in the 1982 International Ballet competition. The progr~m will consist of three new ballets t~ the repertoire of Ballet ..MississipPi. The first ballet "Com-

media, " choreographed by guest choreographer Carlos Carvajal. uses comedy, romance. and intrigue as traditional elements of the Italian Commedia dell'Arte. as well as the eternal Harlequin who motivates the whole. The second ballet is entitled "Legend of Lovers " choreographed by Charles Dickson. Artistic Director of Ballet Mississippi. This ballet is a tale of ill-fated lovers not unlike Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, Lancelot and Guinevere. The final ballet is "Counterpoise" choreography by Carlos Carvajal. The choreographic relationship bet– ween its dancers reflects and reacts to the joy and piquancy of the music. Carlos Carvajal was born in San Francisco, California, fifth genera– tion artist. dancer, choreographer and ballet master. Mr. Carvajal was soloist with the San Francisco Ballet and in Europe with the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas. The Newton Arts Council is thrilled by the opportunity to present Ballet Mississippi to the people of our geographical area. It is hoped that many will take advantage of this op– portunity and attend this spectacular and beautiful program.
