ECJC Hosts Dinner For New President

A dinner and informal press conference were held last Thur– sday to introduce EC.JC president-elect · Dr. Eddie M. Smith and his wife, Charlotte, to media representatives from the five-county. area served by the college. After the dinner, Smith was presented by ECJC board of trustees chairman, H .B. Hud– speth . During the introduction, Hud– speth said that Dr . Smith was one of I9 applicants for the position and that he was one of the' youngest of the applicants for the post . In his opening remarks, Dr. Smith said he preferred to keep most statements fairly general 1 because he will not take over the post as president of ECJC until July I. Dr. Smith is the dean of in– struction at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College, and has worked in the junior college system for nearly I5 years. His wife, Charlotte, has f bachelor's degree in piano. She teaches kindergarten in the public schools and also teaches a few music students. Dr. Smith plays the organ and has been a church organist for about 25 years. He and his wife occasionally do keyboard duets for special church functions.

"I think we can continue to look for strong support from the state, but we need to look more toward the local areas for sources of funding," he said . Smith congratulated the board of trustees on past decisions that kept ECJC from being affected disastrously by recent federal cuts in educational support, and he noted that one goal at ECJC that might need some future emphasis is the educational needs of the adult populace in the service area. "I don~t know anything in my Ii fe I've felt so certain about as I do this position. And I want everyone in the five-county area to know about East Central Junior College," Smith said .
