Chris Collins of Union and Michtlle Murphy of Philadelphia were chosen Mr. and Mrs. ECJC for the 1986-87 school year. Collins is also serving as student body president Sophomore favorites for the 1986-~7 year are Roxanna Manning of Neshoba Central, Jennifer Russell of Newton, Stacie Therrell of Philadelphia, Janet Winstead of Neshoba Central, Mike Courtney of Forest, Boyd "Bear" Germany of Jackson Jim Hill, and Doug Woodward ofWinston Academy. Freshmen favorites chosen were Lori Clark of Union, Janet Mowdy of Neshoba Central, Amy Pouncey of Decatur, Tina Walker of Neshoba Central, Chuck Hinson of Decatur, John Thomas of Neshoba Central, and Patrick Luttrell of Milby High School in Houston. Mary Ann Gray of Forest was chosen most beautiful and Doug Woodward of Louisville was named Most Handsome in the recently held pageant. Beauties selected were Janet Mowdy, Shelly Wolverton, Stacie Therrell, all of Philadelphia; and Stephanie Copeland of Newton. Beaus chosen were Ken Edwards, Steve Hardy, and Mike Killen, all of Philadelphia; and Chris Collins of Union. Michele Murphy of Philadelphia was selected Most Congeniality. In 1986 "Bye, Bye, Birdie" was chosen as the school's annual musical production. East Central's Dinner Theater also produced three one-act plays, "Not My Cup of Tea", "A Case of Belonging", and "The Director's Dilemna", an original by Ovid Vickers, ECJC English instructor. For 1987, the drama department will present "Hello, Dolly".

He said ECJC is one of only 13 colleges ·and universities in the U.S. to have been approved for the · funds, made possible under the College Housing Act through the Department of Education. He said the junior college also applied for and received a $279,000 Energy Conservation Measurers Grant to be used for making existing buildings more energy efficient Dr. Smith said ECJC had also initiated a two-year project for completely revising all of the school's instructional programs to specify identifiable and measurable learning outcomes. In the area of special recognition and achievement for East Central faculty and alumni, Mrs. Ann Burkes and 0. L. Newell were respectively named "Outstanding Academic and Vo– Tech Instructors of the Year", and Dr. Pam Kirk and Kenneth Madison were named "Alumni of the Year". The announcements were made during Homecoming activities in October. Mrs. Burkes has served as head librarian and library science instructor at ECJC since 1969 and Newell has been on the staff since 1961, serving as Director of Vocational-Technical Instruction since 1966. Dr. Kirk of Louisville is currently serving as Association Professor at Mississippi State University in the College of Education, Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. She teaches a full load, advises over 30 students, serves as Department Coordinator of First-Aid and Departmental Coordinator for Student Teachers. She has been conducting research on cardio– respiratory efficiency of elementary children. Madison of Philadelphia serves
as president of the Bank of Philadelphia, a position he has held since July 1977. Also honored during Homecoming activities was Lucille Wood, who was chosen as the 1986 inductee into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. A former athlete and coach at ECJC, Wood began her teaching– coaching career at the junior college in 1956. She is recognized as a pioneer in College Women's Athletics in Mississippi, having been instrumental in setting up the present junior college tennis program and reinstating women's basketball as an organized sport in 1970. Under Coach Wood, the ECJC women were state champions in 1970, 1973, 1976 and 1979; division champions in 1976, 1979, 1980; and she took teams to the Regions Tournament in 1973, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1985. She also coached tennis for over 20 years and produced state champions once in doubles and four times in singles. Coach Wood was chosen Mississippi Junior College "Coach of the Year" by the Junior College Association and the Mississippi Association of Coaches in 1979. That same year, she was a top 20 finalist for National Junior College "Coach of the Year". The Homecoming court for 1986 included Queen Gay McDaniel of Philadelphia and Regina Amos of Union as maid of honor. Sophomore maids were Tina Walker of Philadelphia, Amy Pouncey of Decatur and Janet Mowdy of Philadelphia.
