Pearl River _boys win exciting one over ECJC By Will Price The Meridian Star
In the women's action, neither team could break away and they were tied 10 times in the first half with Pearl River finally taking a 31-30 lead into the dressing room at the intermission. In the second half, East Central took charge. Trailing 44-40, East Central scored 14 unanswered points in a six-minute span to take a 54-44 lead. ECJC never trailed again. Coach Sammy Pace started a lineup of three freshmen and two sophomores for the first time and was pleased with the results. "I got good play from my freshmen and we pressured their gaurds as I told my girls to play more intense and they responded and this was the key to our win tonight." Reginia Amos had 18 points to lead the 11-10 and 3-7 Lady Warriors, while Sethia Townsend and Karin Miller both added 10. Carolyn Littles 27 led Pearl River and Terri Rhodes added 10 as the Lady Wildcats fell to 7-8 and 4-5. East Central's next action will be Tuesday night when they travel to Utica to take on the Utica Junior College Bulldogs. . ,
In the first overtime, PRC got the lead on a freebie by Neal Murray, but Kenny Morgan connected for the Warriors for a one-point lead only to see Murray tie it with another free throw. Pearl River got a 90-86 lead late but a three– point play by Morgan and two free throws from Bob Holloway had ECJC ahead once again. Bridges hit a three-point play for PRC and Morgan canned one to send it into the se– cond overtime. Both teams battled close until the score was 100-99 in favor of the Wildcats. Then Pearl River started coverting its free throws down the stretch and the Wildcats pulled out to a 106-99 advantage. Pearl River, now 10-11 overall and 5-4 in the JUCO South Division, was led by Bridges with 31 points. Murray followed with 21, John Walker 19, Dewayne Hanberry ·13 and Scott Davis 12. Leading the 6-15 and 2-8 Warriors were Talby Bender with 30, Morgan with 29, Ander– son 14, while Holloway and John Vivians ad- ding 10 each. ·
DECATUR - East Central Junior College plit two games with Pearl River Thursday 'ght in junior college basketball action. East Central sailed past PRC 66-56 in the omen's game, before losin~ a hard-fought 110-101 double-over-time decision in the men's game. The men's contest was tied 20 times during the regulation period of play and three .more in the first overtime. Pearl River, which trailed 46-43 at the inter– mission, got the first four points of the second half to gain the lead but the Warriors pecked away and took a 56-50 lead. They continued to trade buckets and the r score was still tied at 66-66. Then East Central pulled away and had its chances at victory, as it held leads of 74-66 and 80-72 late in the game. But the Wildcats came back and tied it 82-82 on a slam by Robert Bridges. ECJC lost another opportunity as Gary Anderson missed two free throws just before timp ran out.
