ECJC looking for first win

Late into the first period, Warrior ..ngelo Smith recovered a fumble in Ranger territory. Five plays later, Davis connected with Chris Hemp- hill in the end zone. Vernadel Irons added the extra point to put ECJC 1 top 7-5. The ECJC Warriors were ahead ~ t i llate in the third quarter. Northwest was forced to punt from the 45 yard line. Tim Jolly's punt hit an EC player on the back of the helmit. The ball was scooped up by Trojan Ronald Burnett who ran with it to the 27. Four plays later, Northwest cannected on a pass in the endzone to go ahead 12-7. Early in the fourth quarter EC quarterback Dewan Salter mis- judged the distance of his receiver giving Trojan James Holloman the opportunity to intercept and run 36 yards for the TD. Jolly's extra point attempt was good, putting the Trojans up 18-7 with 1259 game time remaining. The next Ranger possession added field goal points to Northwest's game to increase their lead. Salter was replaced by quarter- backs Orlando Vaughn and Rusty Davis. The Warriors pulled within eight points of Northwest on a 5 yard pass from Davis to Sedrick Jordan with two minutes left to go in the game. EC attempted a n onside kick which was recovered by Northwest who used the advantage to score a final touchdown with a pass from Leon Reed to Craig Malone. DECATUR - East Central Junior College and Copiah- Lincoln will battle each each other Thursday night in football action a t ECJC. Last years matchup was a close one a s Co-Lin nipped ECJC by the score of 14-13, one of many hea r t - b r eak i ng losses l a s t season. To start off this season ECJC fell to a tough Itawamba club 17-16. Coach A.J.Kilpatrick said he doesn't really know what to ex- pect in the upcoming game with Co-Lin. "It's early in the season and we haven't seen film of them a s yet," the ECJC coach said. He does expect them to be a good team. "They're always good," Kilpatrick said. "This year they a r e ranked high in the .South Division a s well." "They ' r e usua l l y p r e t t y strong," the mentor continued. "One thing for certain it ought to be a game worth seeing." Kilpatrick saw some good things and bad in last weeks opener. "Our kicking game was a plus," he said. "The defensive effort was good." He noted the play of Micheal Groves, Rusty Bagley, Andrea Greg, and Tabb SaGders. "Offensively the blocking d i d n ' t s h ow m e m u c h , " Kilpatrick stated. "But I think that will improve, the timing will come around. " Co-Lin coach Ray Ishee respects any A.J. Kilpatrick club. "You know that they'll play hard-nosed and physical, " Ishee said. "It should be another close game." Co-Lin beat EMJC in the season opener 14-7. "We played hard, I'm proud of the effort they put forth against EMJC," Ishee said. $ He said the key to their v last week was the offense. "We had the ball for 60 minutes to their 40 minutes, Iskee said. "It kept our defense off the field." Ishee noted that tailback Willie Holmes did a good job. He was pleased with the entire team.
