ECJC Lands Playoff C-lrth Against Holmes This Week

scored three toucheowns to lead Holmes to a 55-0 romp over winless Coahoma in a Thursday night game and clinch the North Division ti- tle. Holmes finished 6-0 in the division and 8-2 overall. Mississippi Delta, runnerup in the North, was defeated 10-7by Southwest in an inter- divisional game but still end- ed 5-1 in its division. P e a r l R i v e r , w h i c h defeated Northeast 21-14 last week, finished 4-1-1 in the South Division and 7-2-1 overall. In other games, quarter- back Eddie Smith threw three touchdown passes Saturday night to give East Mississippi a 31-27win over East Central; Jones whipped Itawamba 21-14 in the final -outing for both teams; and Northwest defeated Hinds 27-15. Itawamba finished third in the North with a 4-2 record and 7-3 overall.

Pearl River, the SouthDivi- sion champion, takes on Mississippi Delta Saturday night a t Poplarville while Holmes, the North Division winner Holmes hosts East Central at Goodman. The two winners will meet next week for the overall 1981 crown. With Jones ineligible, East Central reached the playoffs as the runnerup in the South Division with an overall record of only 4-6 including last week's loss to East Mississippi. TheWarriors are 4-2,however, in their division. Jones, with a 4-1-1 division record, was placed on proba- tion last month because of a u s h i n g i n c i d e n t i n !eptember involving Jones Coach Sim Cooley and a referee. United Press international Holmes and Pearl River will be the host teams this week in the Mississippi junior college football playoffs, with Mississippi Delta and East Central capturing the run- nerup spots in the post-season games. Jones finished the regular season with the best overall record, 8-1-1, but the Bobcats are currently on probation and not eligible to participate in this year's playoffs. Gulf Coast, the defending state champion, was defeated I 41-14 Saturday night by Copiah-Lincolnto keep Coach George Sekul's Bulldogs from winning a berth in the post- season action.
