Achievement Scholarship Awards were presented recently by' East Central Junior College to students in the 5 county district. These tuition scholarships were awarded to the black and the white Student in each high school in the district with the highest grade point average and who planned on attend- ing East Central Junior College. Twenty-two students will be receiving scholarships for their freshman year during the 1980-81 academic school year. Students from Newton County schools receiving scholarships include: Lori Seal and Pam Cleveland of Union High School; Sheila Miranda Welch and Tem Lynne Russell of Decatur High School; Dale Mitchell Reese and Kalena Ruth Spires of Hickory High School; Laura Bernice McDonald of Newton High School; and Angela Fay Jones of Newton County Academy.
Terri was a member of the Beta Club and Future Busi- ness Leaders of America. She was selected as a star student and was valedictor- ian of her class. Dale Mitchell Reese is the grandson of Mr. A.J. Temple of Hickory. While attending Hickory High School he was active in the Beta Club, H Club, FFA and served as a class officer. Dale participat- ed in football, basketball, baseball and the band Kalena Ruth Spires of Chunky is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. John Spires. While attending Hickory High School she was active in the Beta Club, Annual staff, and the BULLDOG WORLD school paper. She served as Vice-President of the Beta Club and was a school photographer. Kalena was selected as Valedictorian of her senior class and received Advanced Biology and Triginometry awards. Laura Bernice McDonald of Lawrence is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. McDonald. While attending Newton High School she was a member of the Beta Club and served as Vice-Presi. dent of the FHA Club. She plans to go in to the business field at ECJC. Angela Fay Jones of Lake is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Jones. She is a graduate of Newton County Bcademy and while attending school there she was a member of the Beta Club and Annual staff. She played on the basketball team and softball team and served as a cheerleader -
campus. She also partici- pated in the Beta Club, Annual Staff, Drama Club, Band, Basketball and Track teams. She plans to major in Secretarial Science at ECJC. Pam Cleveland, the daughter of Mrs. Helen Wi dh am of Union, will receive the other achieve- ment scholarship this fall. While a student a UHS, she belonged to the Future Homemakers of America and the U Club, having lettered in basketball her senior year.
