Glenn Walker to be honored by ECJC Lieutenant General Glenn D. Walk.er of Union will be honored this Saturday, Oct– ober 13, as Alumnus of the Year for East Central Junior College during the school's annual Homecoming festivi– ties. The public is invited to attend a reception which will be held in General Walker's honor that after– noon at 4:30 in the Fine Arts Building, and again at the Alumni Banquet in the W.C. Mabry Cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. He will also be recognized on the field dur– ing halftime activities of the East Central football game later that night. General Walk.er was born on January 21, 1916 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. His parents moved to Mor– ton, Mississippi in 1926. He graduated from Morton High School in 1934 and attended East Central Jun– ior College in 1934-1935. While attending E.C.J.C., Walk.er began his military career by joining the Mis– si~sippi National Guard in . Oe~atur. He later attended the University of Mississippi in 1935-1936 and Missis- sippi College, 1937-1939. Subsequent to graduation, he joined the faculty and coaching staff of Mississippi College. He entered the service in February of 1942 and was assigned to the 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. Staff College during 1950-1951 and was a faculty member of the college for three years. He was as– signed as a student officer in the Army War College in 1954-1955. Upon graduation · he was assigned as a staff officer in Headquarters, Seventh U.S. Army in Ger– many until the summer of 1956 when he became Com– manding Officer of the 6th Infantry Regiment in Berlin. mander, 25th Infantry Divi– sion. He went to South Vietnam with intial ele– ments of the 25th Division in December 1965. From April 1966 to October 1966 he commanded the 3rd Bri– gade Task Force. In October 1966 General Walker was assigned as Assistant Divi– sion Commander of the 4th · Infantry Division in Viet– nam. In July of 1971, General Walker became- Commander of I Corps Group in Korea and was promoted to Lieu– tenant General on August 1, 1971. He returned to the United States in August of 1972 and was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Staff, Army as Special As– sista1;t for Training. General Walker became Commander of First United States Army, Fort Meade, Maryland on August 1, 1973.
In January of 1944, Walk.er went to England with the 22nd Infantry as a Company Commander. lie participated in the Utah Beach Operation with the regiment in Normandy, be– came a battalion com– mander during the Saint Lo break.out and was wounded during the Huertgen Forest action ad evacuated to the States. . Upon release from the hospital in June of 1945, now a Lieutenant Colonel, he became a Tactical De- . partment Instructor at the Infantry School, Fort Ben– ning, Georgia. He joined the Advisory Group in Nank.ing, China, in the sum– mer of 1947 where he remained until the fall of 1948 when ·he joined the General Headquarters, Far East Command in Tok.yo. He returned to the states in August of 1967 and was assigned to Headc;.uarters, United States Continental Army Command. In Novem– ber of 1967, he was pro– moted to the rank of Major General and became the Deputy . Chief of Staff for Military Operations and Re– serve Forces, Headquarters, United States Continental Army Command, Fort Mon– roe, Virginia. In November of 1969, General Walker returned to Vietnam and became the. Commanding General 4th Infantry Division. He was assigned to the Department of the Army on August ·1, 1970 and assumed the po– sition of Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Military Operations.
In the summer of 1958, he was transferred to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters, Department of the Army and became a staff member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1960. He attended the National War College as a student officer in 1962-1963 and upon grad– uation in July 1963 was assigned to Eighth U.S. Army as the assistant Chief of Staff, G-1. In July of 1964, Colonel Walk.er was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and assigned to Head– quarters, U.S. Army, Paci– fic, as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1. In August of 1974, Gen– eral Walker retired from active military service. He and his wife, the former Miss Margaret Hays of Union, now live on a farm near Union and they have three sons. They are Glenn Jr, a Major in the U.S . Army, who is currently sta– tioned in Washington, D.C.; Michael, who is a Doctor of Veterinary Medi~ine in For- est, and Keith, who is a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and is currently stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas. General Walker is cur– rently serving as Adjutant General to the National Guard of the State of Mis– sissippi.
