Ovid Vickers to se~e as NCTE writing Judge

The National Council of Teachers of English announ-' ces the appointment of Ovid Vickers, 'Depar.tment of Eng– lish, East Central Junior College, Decatur, MS as a regional judge for the 1979 . NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing Pr~ram. Through this nationally rec– <>gnized competition, now in its twenty-second year, aP.proximately 800 high 5'hool seniors are cited for excellence in writing and are reeommended to colleges and universities for admis– sion and for financial aid, if needed. NCTE also honors teachers and schools that have participated in the training of these young· men and women. Seven thousand stu~ents have been nomina– ted for NCTE Awards in · 1979. Results of the contest are announced in October of each year. Students are nominated for Achievement Awards in Writing by their hh~h school .__ - ,.

English departments and are chosen for recognition by state judging committees. (Each nominee submits an impromptu theme and a sample of his or her best writing to be judged.) The regional judging committees are composed of both high school and college teachers of English who work under the direction of state coor– dinators. The National Council of Teachers of English is made up of more than 100,000 individual teachers and insti– tutional members at all levels of instruction, from elemen– tary school through graduate college. Its goal is more effective teaching of English language and literature in the nation's schools and col– leges. NCTE publishes jour– nals, books and recordings to aid teachers in the classroom and in their professional development. ----0--
