Dr. Smith is man of many titles The ultimate professional title in a long list of titles dealing with education has just been added to the name of Ecldie M. Smith, Dean of Copiah-Lincoln Junior Col– lege, Natchez Campus. the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, thus ending a six-year effort while both working and at– tending graduate school.

Dr. Smith has held many other titles in his career, which began as a classroom teacher in the Natchez– Adams Public School Sys– tem in 1965. He was Campus Director of Co-Lin Natchez from 1972-75; Director of Aca– demic Affairs for the Uni– versity of Southern Missis– sippi, Natchez, from 1970- 72: Acting Director of USM, Natchez, and instructor of science during 1970; Assis– tant Principal of Natchez– Adams High School from 1969-70; Secondary Science Supervisor, grades 7-12, from 1967-69; and classroom teacher of science from 1965-67. Dr. Smith finished his course work while complet– ing a residency requirement on the USM Hattiesburg campus in 1975. Exempt from oral. com– p re he nsive examinations, Dr. Smith successfully com– pleted written comprehen– sives in the summer of 1975, and immediately set out on work on the dissertation. The topic, "A Comparison of Student and Community Profiles for the Natchez Campus of the Copiah-Lin– coln Junior College Dis– trict," was selected, and intensive research and writ– ing began . He successfully defended the dissertation June 3!), when the title of "Df:;" Smith was conferred. Tlie formal conferring of the degree took place at the USM Hattiesburg campus on Aug. 18.

Smith is married to the former Charlotte Flowers of Natchez and is the father of t wo children, Mary Kelli and Wendy Kay. He is the son of Mrs. Lavelle Smith of Louisville and of the late Mr. Mal E. Smith. He grad– uated from Noxapater High School in 1961, East Central Junior college in 1963, and completed both bachelor's and master's degrees at Mississippi State Universi– ty. Smith recently had the title of "Doctor of Educa– tion" conferred upon him at commencement exercises at
