Dr. Anzalone presented research findings that indi- cate: (1) A higher percentage of teenagers are interested in attending college, (2) Younger teenagers have more college asperations than those approaching col- lege age, (3) Older people are matriculating in college nationwide in larger numbers, (4) Students still tend to leave colleges mostly for non-academic reasons and not because of program difficulties. He made some suggestions on hproving recruiting practices. and retention efforts. Prior to the address by Dr. Anzalone the administrative staff of the college conducted the traditional orientation for faculty. Dr. Charles V. Wright, President, wel- comed the group to the 53rd fall opening and presented the Reverend Gus Merritt, pastor of the local baptist church for a brief devotional. Featured at the pre-" session faculty workshop at Fast Central Junior College In Friday, August 22 was Dr. J .S. Anzalone, Regional Director for ACT Educational iervices. Dr. Anzalone lddressed the faculty on the ubject "Recruiting and tetaining College Students n the 80's." Before joining ACT the speaker was Associate Director of the Institute for Higher Educational Oppr t - unities at. the Southern Regional Education Board in Atlanta. Earlier he had served as Director of Admis- sions at the University of Southern Mississippi and had taught in the public schools in this state. Dr. Anzalone holds the bachelors and master's degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and the PhD in Higher Education from the orida State University. He as a distinguished research nd publication record and is frequent presenter at pro- fessional meetings through -.a+ +hm Cna*th.
Mr. James bykes are worr ing very hard to make thi- year the biggest and best for the band. Sixty-six members reported for preschool work- shop with the remainder scheduled for the August 25 opening date. Each auxiliary groups practiced on individ- ual routines for halftime shows. The rifle corps, flag corps, feature twirler and Centralettes worked on special drills. Drum major for the Warrior Band will be Shellye Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hill of Louisville. Feature twirler will be Dulcie Dee Ewing daughter of Mr. and Mrs Walter L. Ewing of Philadel phia. According to Mr. Dykes the band is looking real good and the halftimc show will be better this fa1 and include more rifles flags, drums and horns. Preseason planning, drill ing and practicing requirc dedicated efforts on the pan of many students and their leaders. The extra time ant work helps to make a bette school year for all. Eas Central Junior College has i tradition of "extra effort" or the part of student leaders This year promises much i we may judge the present b! past experience.
Several groups of students arrived on campus Sunday and Monday, August 17 and 18, to begin preparations for the opening of the fall session. Groups included the - SBA officers, cheerleaders, football players and band members. Altogether, 141 students arrived a week before opening date. SBA officers met with sponsor Denver Bfackeen in a planning session to discuss homecoming plans, dances, election and various campus activities. On hand for the meetings were President Ted Pope of Phi!adelphia; Vice President Bert Gilmore of Sebastopol; Secretary Debbie McBeath of Union; and Treasurer Leah Living- stom of Louisville. Cheerleaders have been on campus practicing cheers and planning activities. Heading the squad this year will be Jane Harthcock of Newton and Vicki Hamrick of Enterprise. Other cheerlead- ers are Cindy Cleveland of Union, Dina Walker of Phila- delphia, Robin Tabor of Louisville, Vikki Jenkins of Philadelphia, Diane Griffin of Union and Teresa Good- I n of Newton.
