Selected As Outstanding

Four East Central Junior College students have been chosen to appear in the 1971 edition of Outstanding College Athletes of America. Selected for this honor are two students from Forest, Joe Tadlock and Mickey Sessions. Others were Keith Dooly of Union and David Culpepper of Newton. Announcement of their selection was made by the Board of Advisors of OUT– STANDING COLLEGE ATHLETES OF AMERICA, an annual awards volume published to honor America's finest college athletes. Coaches and athletic directors from individual colleges and universities across the nation nominated the winning athletes on the basis of their displayed_ abilities, not only in athletics but also in community service and campus activities. Other criteria for those selected for OUTSTANDING COLLEGE ATHLETES OF AMERICA included strength of character, leadership both on and off the playing field, and scholarship. According to the late Coach Vince Lombardi, those chosen as Outstanding College Athletes distinguish them– selves because necessary traits for leadership have been learned on the playing field. These traits, Lombardi said, are "sacrifice, selt-denial, love, fearlessness, humility, and the perfectly desciplined will." Biographies of all Out– standing College Athletes of America will be included in the 1971 edition to be published in July. The program's Board of Advisors is chaired by James Jeffrey, Executive Director, Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
